Commonly Asked Questions

  • How long does it take to learn?

    • It is difficult to predict how long it will take each child to learn touch type. In addition to ability and motivation, practice at home and commitment play a major part.

  • My child is very busy, can they learn by attending an intensive course only?

    • It is not possible for the majority of children to learn all the keys and to touch type well by attending one intensive holiday course. When researching the best way to run courses I discovered that the best results are attained by a mixture of weekly classes, specific home practise and intensive holiday courses. Children can start with an intensive course and then attend weekly sessions until they have finished. Alternatively in the longer a holidays a 'sandwich course' works well: one intensive course, practice at home working on specific tasks followed by another intensive course, this is popular with children who are at boarding school but is not suitable for all students.

  • Is home practise important?

    • Yes, very much so. It is similar to learning an instrument. Without practice, progress is slow and often motivation dwindles. It is the regular practise that builds skills and muscle memory.

  • How fast will my child touch type at the end of a course?

    • My aim is that each child completes the course once they have covered all the keys and can touch type automatically with good accuracy, using the correct fingers, at a speed which is appropriate to their age and ability.
